Great Art Fails
Great Art Fails

Never...ever...listen to experts.Go your own way...do your own thing.  What you have uniquely inside you is pure perfection...only to be contaminated by expert option... What do you think makes these people experts in the first place? It's not always talent and intelligence ...and the better you get to know the most prestigious of them the more that you will find it to be true.Be your own judge and jury...the great ones all had that in common...the experts rejected them and they rejected the experts...they went over their heads.Blaze your own trail...do it with total confidence in your v... The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of
The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of

Years ago one of the better Irish art critics wrote something like this.... 'O'Donoghue Ross carries his rather substantial subject matter rather lightly...' Brilliant insight...that's what you look for in a good critic, like Beckett...or Hilary Pyle or Bill Zimmer of the NY Times...insight...that's their job and some do it rather well...   Critics have always been rather kind to me...at the end of the day it shouldn't matter...but it does...unfortunately...rather. We are human beings we respond like any animal to praise...but what about the early Mattise or early and late Cezanne or... Read more →

The Game of Evolution
The Game of Evolution

THE GODS AND GODDESSES OF THE GAME OF EVOLUTIONThe game of evolution...WE ARE ALL PLAYERS IN THIS GAME. That's right....in our mind and soul that spirit/essence of the communal unconscious...we are players of Olympus...a video game involving episodes so life-like...they seem real... Or almost real.. for there are some of us who see behind the curtain and glimpse that charlatan wizard typing away at the keyboard... This does not mean to impune either you or me or the donkey whose tail we keep trying to emplace. In place...for that is the gist of the game...to find our proper place in the scr... Read more →

The Total Dilettante
The Total Dilettante

I am an amateur (insofar as I do what I do, out of love for the chance of discovery – not for money) and the highest praise I have received from an art critic is the aforementioned ‘doesn’t have a very strong sense of direction’. You can’t discover anything if you already know what lies ahead. I want to change direction often, do it on a whim – and not take any of it very seriously. We amateurs are entertaining ourselves with our pursuit and strong senses of direction are for the ambitious careerists who wish to build a clientele and an identity. We have no... Read more →

The King of Beasts
The King of Beasts

17 Dec 14 - O'Donoghue/Ross

The fact that we human beings are mere animals often escapes us. In the vegetable world the druids and Gnostics knew that trees were the kings of the plants. In the animal world we humans are the kings of beasts – not the lions. We are beginning to have more respect for this proposition for we are learning how animals share so much and even exceed us in many ways. We do however deserve to be atop the fauna list, but should always remember that we have a bestial side just below the surface and are far from the angels in the level of perfection of our psyches.... Beyond Space and Time
Beyond Space and Time

10 Dec 14 - O'Donoghue/Ross

‘WHY IS THERE ANYTHING’ The obvious apparent - that all people are not the same - is something which we take for granted without wondering at such diversity in nature. The leaves of trees and flakes of snow share this incredible range of variety, and if we consider it we begin to realise that mass production in nature does not really exist. There are no carbon copies – even in cases of identical twin studies. With so many individual opinions it is equally amazing that we can conceptually share anything – yet all people seem to have the same links to a universal unc... Read more →
